Public Libraries in Singapore

The National Library Board (NLB) of Singapore was formed in the year 1995. the NLB is aimed towards the creation of "borderless libraries," an initiative aimed at bringing the libraries closer to Singaporeans, and to connect Singaporeans with the outside world.

Ang Mo Kio Public Library

Ang Mo Kio Library was officially opened on 17th Aug, 1985 by Mr. Yeo Toon Chia, Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio Constituency. The eReaders’ loan service allows library users to borrow eReaders and download their favourite ebooks from the popular database OverDrive. Users may register to borrow the eReader between the third and fourth week of the month. There are many theories to the origin of the name Ang Mo Kio, one of which being that it was named after the Hokkien term for tomatoes. Ang Mo Kio Public Library’s meeting room on Level 2 is thus officially christened “Tomato Room”.

Bedok Public Library

The Bedok Public Library was officially opened on 28 September 1985 by Prof. S Jayakumar, Minister for Law & Foreign Affairs and Second Minister for Law. it has a seating capacity of 565.
Facilities : Multimedia stations , Newspaper Reading Area, 4-hour Bookdrop, Programme Zone, 2 Multi-Purpose Rooms, Quiet Reading Room, Stage, Water Cooler.
Services : Regular storytelling and school holiday programmes ,User education and Information literacy programmes Bedok Public Library 2 ,Library outreaches ,Performances and activities ,Talks and workshops ,Exhibitions and displays.
Book Collection : It provides library users with a wide-ranging and varied selection of books and audio-visual materials in Malay for lending and reference purposes.

eDevices (iPads, TumbleBooks Playaways and Kindles) are given for Loan.

the library offers an hour-long iPad workshop during which members may borrow an iPad to home. Registration is required via walk-in or call to Helpdesk.

Bishan Public Library

Bishan Public Library was officially opened on 1 September 2006 by Mr. Wong Kan Seng, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Home Affairs. Bishan Public Library is well known for its architecture, It was also awarded the President’s Design Award, Design of the Year 2007. The President’s Design Award is Singapore’s highest honour accorded to designers.

Bukit Batok Public Library

The Bukit Batok Public Library was officially opened on 21 November 1998 by BG (NS) Lee Hsien Loong, Deputy Prime Minister. This Library has the distinction of being the first library to introduce the Electronic Library Management System (ELIMS). It allows for automated and instantaneous book borrowing, as well as instant return of books via bookdrop at any public library in Singapore.

Bukit Merah Public Library

The Bukit Merah Public Library was officially opened on 28 December 1982 by Mr Lim Chee Onn. it was one of the first few libraries to offer audio-visual loan services. On the first Thursday and third Saturday of the month, the library offers movie screenings at the Radin Mas Hall. Admission is free and for all ages.

Bukit Panjang Public Library

The Bukit Panjang Community Library was officially opened on 4 April 1998 by Dr Teo Ho Pin, Member of Parliament for Sembawang GRC . The book club was the first Chinese Book Club ever to be started at NLB. It currently meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month and is open to homemakers and the general public.

Central Public Library

Central Public Library is known as "My Tree House", the World's 1st Green Library for Kids. My Tree House was opened on 31 May 2013 by Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Communications and Information. it is the only fully underground public library. It is also the only library to have a conveyor belt system for its bookdrop, as well as a monitor display at each bookdrop.

Choa Chu Kang Public Library

Choa Chu Kang Public Library was officially opened at Lot One Shoppers' Mall Level 3 on 22 February 1997 by Mr Yeo Cheow Tong, Minister for Health and the Environment, and Member of Parliament for Hong Kah GRC. A Chinese classics recital programme for children, parents attend with their children to learn and recite Chinese classical texts such as Analects. Occupying a floor area of 2,394 square metres, Choa Chu Kang Public Library is the largest shopping mall library in Singapore.

Cheng San Public Library

Cheng San Public Library was officially opened on 6 March 1997 by Mr Zainul Abidin Rasheed, Member of Parliament for Cheng San GRC. One of the highlights of Cheng San Public Library is the artistic spaces that feature art works and help to promote art appreciation to the community. Cheng San Public Library is the first library to acquire artworks from local artists in line with NLB’s effort to promote local artists and art appreciation among readers. It is also the first library to introduce the cluster concept in multimedia services and self-check machines.

Clementi Public Library

The Clementi Public Library (CMPL) was officially opened on 23 April 2011 by Mr Lim Hng Kiang, Minister for Trade and Industry and Advisor to Telok Blangah Grassroots Organisations. Clementi Public Library promotes a conducive learning and reading environment by organising activities and programmes tailored for the principle of ‘Learn Through Asking. Clementi Public Library is the first library in Singapore to introduce the Mystery Brown Bag Service for the lunch time crowd.
